This assistance is also a form of Indonesia’s concern for disasters in other countries
Jakarta (Armfalcon.com) – The Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP) said that it is also overseeing the provision of assistance from the Government of Indonesia to the Republic of Vanuatu so that it is on target.
The provision of this assistance is a form of humanitarian support to countries in the South Pacific which were hit by an earthquake and hurricane some time ago.
“BPKP is participating in overseeing the provision of assistance from the Government of Indonesia to Vanuatu so that it is accountable and on target,” said Deputy Head of BPKP for Politics, Law and Human Development and Culture Iwan Taufiq Purwanto in an official statement in Jakarta, Tuesday.
Iwan revealed that the assistance sent by the Government of Indonesia to Vanuatu constituted basic needs for refugees, such as logistical assistance for basic needs of 34.7 tons consisting of 11 types of goods with a value of Rp. 7.2 billion.
The aid departed on May 8 2023 via Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on a My Indo Airline cargo plane.
The Indonesian government also sent a humanitarian team of 14 representatives from the Coordinating Ministry (Kemenko) for Human Development and Culture (PMK), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), and the State Intelligence Agency (BIN) using a Garuda aircraft.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy said the assistance handed over by the Government of Indonesia to the country of Vanuatu was a form of solidarity and humanitarian support in dealing with disasters.
“This assistance is also a form of Indonesia’s concern for disasters in other countries,” he said.
Vanuatu declared a state of emergency after the earthquake and typhoon, in which a magnitude 6.5 earthquake rocked the country on March 3 or the day after Typhoon Judy hit. The category four storm caused damage and flooding across nearly all of the country’s 83 islands.
Amidst that situation, the locals are now facing another major tropical storm namely Cyclone Kevin.
About 5,000 people were reported to have been displaced, while Typhoon Kevin, which was registered as a category three storm, brought winds of up to 130 km/h.
So far, no fatalities have been reported. However, as a result of the disaster almost all of Vanuatu’s citizens, namely around 300 thousand people, were affected.
